Sidney’s Cow-Themed 1st Birthday Party
Why was her 1st birthday cow-themed, you ask? Well, one day Sidney was holding the tv remote (her favorite toy) and somehow navigated to Amazon Prime. She scrolled all the way to a movie called First Cow, and sneakily bought it for $14.99. When we found out we laughed SO hard and thought…well Sidney must really love cows!
I’m not sure if she really likes cows as much as I think she does, but the First Cow movie incident was enough for me to plan her first birthday party with a joyful cow theme. Finding cute bovine party items was much easier than I thought!
Having A Party During Covid Times
I thought about canceling Sidney’s first birthday party, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Being a year old (and keeping a tiny human alive) for a whole year is a reason to celebrate, and I didn’t want to make light of it. We decided to make a party but do it as safely as possible.
We booked the party at Casati’s, a venue with a great patio space and lots of room for social distancing. It’s the same place where we had Sidney’s baby shower! The staff and owners are very serious about following local protocols, so I knew it would be a safe spot.
The guest list wasn’t as long as I had hoped, as we kept it very small to avoid exposure. Just local family and Sidney’s Bubby who was visiting from DC for the weekend.
Party Decorations and Details
The cake was masterfully made by my friend Erin at ECBG Cake Studio! If you’re in Chicago and looking for a gorgeous and delicious wedding or party cake, I highly recommend her.
The rest of the decorations I made myself! I got quotes for balloon garlands, but didn’t want to spend the $200 so I ordered a balloon garland kit from Amazon for $15. I was expecting assembly to be a nightmare, but I watched a couple of youtube videos and the whole garland only took about 30 minutes to put together. I also ordered a handy balloon pump to make my life easier! A cow birthday sign, cow-print napkins, and a flowers from Trader Joe’s were the final touch.
As you can see from the pictures, Sidney had a blast. I’m so thankful that we were able to give her a first birthday party, no matter how small. She was surrounded by family who loves her, and that’s all I ever wanted!

OMG, I love this, Roxanne! What a fabulous cake and such a cute party theme! I love cows, too, and just scored a cow print tote bag thrifting this weekend! I laughed at Sidney’s accidental movie purchase because I just accidentally purchased a movie for $19.99 while I was deciding whether I wanted to spend that on a kids’ movie and I accidentally clicked purchase. Oops! Happy Birthday to sweet Sidney!
