To my Jewish friends, happy new year! Last week Dan and I celebrated the Jewish new year by going to a restaurant downtown and having some traditional Jewish food. I wore this lace over the shoulder top since it was a fancy-er occasion.
We consider ourselves to be very culturally Jewish; not necessarily religious. To us, that means we enjoy the traditions, food, and values and don’t stress much about going to temple and praying.

On the Jewish new year, or Rosh Hashanah, it is traditional for us to eat certain foods. Joe’s on 15th and H was serving up some of our favorite traditional fare for just one day! Apples dipped in honey, chopped liver, gefilte fish, matzah ball soup, and brisket! I get so nostalgic for some of these things because my grandmother used to have us over and make them from scratch.
While the restaurant wasn’t as good as my grandmother’s cooking, it definitely hit the spot. I made an exception from my usual grain-free diet and ate the matzah ball soup. It was tasty.
For our night out I wore this lace off the shoulder top (which was only $20 by the way) with denim and my favorite platform heeled sandals. I also scored this Clare V leopard clutch on Ebay for just $100! *Pats self on the back*. It is my favorite because it goes with everything. Just goes to show you that I’m not your typical shopper! I love a bargain.
Tomorrow is Yom Kippur – or the day of atonement. It is a fasting day for us. The fasting goes from sun down to sun down…or Tuesday night to Wednesday night. I do it every year – it isn’t so bad. I usually permit myself to drink water because I tend to feel sick when dehydrated. But some people don’t even drink liquids. If you are on medication then fasting is certainly not recommended.
I hope everyone who is fasting has/had an easy fast! To the rest of you, I hope you learned a little about my culture and that you like perusing the photos from my new year’s meal!
