Denim on denim, once a fashion no-no, has become popular to wear in the fashion world, and among celebrities. Big names like Gigi Hadid, Dakota Fanning, Rachel Bilson, and other well-known models, actresses, and even bloggers have all jumped on board the trend train. Not only is it comfy and convenient given that many of us have several denim pieces in our closets already, but it can look really chic and effortless when done correctly. Although the pairing can be a tad intimidating, being clad head-to-toe in the look can quickly become overwhelming, I have several tips and tricks that will have you wearing denim on denim like a pro!
Fabulous Fit
Rule number one of wearing denim on denim is to make sure your clothes have just the right fit. Ill-fitting clothes can make your outfit look sloppy, dated, and out of style. I would recommend great fitting pants to start, especially when it comes to jeans, but extend that idea even further. In addition to pants, such as boyfriend styles, skinny jeans, overalls, and flare leg, also ensure that your chambray shirts have a little nip in the waist, like this one over at Bright on the Day, and that denim jackets aren’t bulky or oversized. Your shorts should be a good length—no booty required—and so should your denim skirts.
Color Combination
Combining the correct colors is key to looking great in denim on denim. Some celebs are able to wear the monochromatic version of this trend, like InStyle points out, but I think most of us look best when there’s a variation, or greater contrast, in the denim’s color. For example, a light blue denim chambray top would look great with a pair of dark blue denim distressed skinny jeans and chunky heeled sandals. Another variation of this is to wear colored denim. There are so many different jean bottoms in different hues—like white denim jeans with a blue or gray jean jacket over a long sweater and your favorite booties would look great for fall.
Accessorize
Injecting some other colors besides blue into these ensembles will add depth and interest to your look, and I highly recommend it. Even if it’s something as simple as a brown belt and handbag, accessories will break up the monotony. I love the idea of a classic Burberry scarf, a black felted hat, or red sunglasses in addition to your denim on denim looks. Don’t forget to have fun with your footwear, too. Lyst highly recommends pairing these denim on denim looks with sneakers, for a sporty feel. But I also like the idea of tan boots or leopard print flats as fun choices.
Now that you know just how easy it can be to wear the trending denim on denim look, it’s time to scour your closet for denim separates and have fun putting different outfits together. With denim already being a wardrobe staple, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at just how many items you already have waiting to be worn this fall. Don’t forget to have fun with your accessories, too. From colored coats to handbags, and patterned shoes to plaid scarves, these special pieces will help round out and complete your denim on denim ensembles.
