I recently read an article on petite girl style and I took it to heart. I’m 5’1″ so looking taller never hurts.
TEE | DENIM | SIMILAR HAT| SIMILAR BAG | OLD COAT (similar, similar) | BOOTIES | SIMILAR NECKLACE | LIPS: LOC IN WILDEST DREAMS | (Scarf was a gift from New Mexico!)
In a nutshell, there are five easy things short girls can do to appear taller:
- show some ankle;
- avoid long tops and tuck your shirt in when you can;
- avoid anything knee-length. Midi or mini works best;
- always wear at least a small heel;
- Monochromatic looks create length.
Here is the article if you are interested in reading the whole thing.
For this look, I employed 3 out of 5 of these petite tips, and I must say I felt sky high. It could have just been because I loved the outfit, but I’m sure the petite tips helped.
I really love this hat (last seen here). It was too big, so I fixed it with some foam weatherproofing tape. I picked it up at the hardware store for $5.99 and it helped my hat stay on! Even in the crazy winds we were having!
Another petite problem – when hats never fit. Let me know if you want a tutorial on how I fixed my hat. I’m not exceptionally crafty so I believe anyone can do it.

I tucked in my shirt, because otherwise the hem on this style tee would have hit my mid-thigh. I cuffed my jeans enough to show a little ankle. And I wore a pair of my favorite black booties!
These boots are actually really comfortable. I can walk miles in them without any discomfort, and that’s a must for us city girls. They go with everything and they come in other colors, too. The girl at Nordstrom told me that she wears hers to death, then buys a new pair each year. She loves them that much. So I was like “okay I’ll try them” and now I totally see what she was talking about.
My tee and jeans are both from Old Navy. They always have awesome sales!
Do you have any other tips for looking taller? People are usually surprised when I tell them how short I am, so I must be doing something right already.

I have some tunic length shirts, too, and I love them! But I’d definitely wear them with heels!
Yoy have some great tips here. Wearing heels is always a great idea. Even though I’m 5’11” I love wearing heels. You look great in this coat and hat. xx

Thanks, Chelsea. Seriously, we could all use the extra inch!
Great tips and look! I have yet to find a pair of booties I can walk all way in.

Thanks! It is hard to find comfortable booties, but these ones have a rubber sole and are real leather, which I think both contribute to the comfiness.
Great tips. I’m 5’5″ myself which isn’t too tall, so at times I am always looking for ways to look taller!!

Thank you, Meghan. Even if you don’t need the extra height, feeling confident in your outfit always gives me that extra “oomph!”
I’m 5’10” so this is something I think about often, but these are great tips! Proportions are important to any look. Love your outfit.

Thanks, Amy Ann! I agree, proportions are key, and that is what this post all boils down to.
Proportions are definitely key to elongating your frame! This is such a fun layered look!
