I was in Boston this weekend visiting Dan’s Bubby for her 90th birthday. On the way home, we were stuck on the plane circling Chicago for 3.5 hours, and eventually had to stop in Rockford, Illinois to refuel. What was supposed to be a 2 hour trip turned into a 5 hour trip. Blah. While we waited, I started thinking about all the fun winter activities I’ve done so far in Chicago.
Christmas might be over, but winter in Chicago is definitely here to stay. At least until March-ish. And we still have so many fun things to do here! While one activity is Christmas-oriented, the others are simply winter fun. There’s certainly plenty of fun to be had in Chicago year-round!
The Best Chicago Winter Activities
1. Christkindlmarket.
This is one of Dan’s favorite activities. Since we went to Germany last year and actually got to see the Christmas markets, it feels even more special. Snuggle up with a mug of spiced wine or hot chocolate, and take a look at all the hand made tchotchkes.
2. Ice Skating at the Ribbon.
Say goodbye to ice skating in a circle in a regular old rink. The ribbon is a cute little outdoor ice skating path with fun music playing. I’m looking forward to going this month!
3. See a Play at the Oriental or Cadillac Theater.
We just saw Fiddler on the Roof last week, and I can’t wait to see another show! The theaters themselves are like art – I always find myself marveling at the ceilings with my mouth open, haha. I’ve been going to the theater with my family since I was young, so seeing a show is always a special treat for me.
4. High Tea At the Drake.
The Palm court at the Drake Hotel is one of the most beautiful rooms I’ve ever seen. Nibble on all the delicious tea snacks (sweet and savory) and pick a tea from the Palm Court’s extensive selection, all while listening to live harp music. I like to admire what everyone is wearing, too. Definitely make a reservation for this one.
5. Shop On Michigan Avenue.
Even if you’re broke from the holidays, the window shopping on Michigan Avenue is quite spectacular. I love strolling through the department stores and oogling at the window displays at Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Gucci, and Neiman Marcus.
6. Go To A Comedy Show.
Chicago is known for its famous improv comedy shows, aka Second City. The shows are very interactive, and no show is exactly the same as the next. We always laugh our butts off when we see comedy!
This list could easily go on and on, but these Chicago winter activities are some of my favorites. Book your trip to Chicago and make sure you do at least one of these!
