Date night is the best. I like having a break from cooking dinner, but I mostly like it because I have the chance to get all dolled up. I had been saving this black cut-out backless maxi dress for a special occasion, and a muggy night in DC was the perfect opportunity.

We read about The Iron Gate restaurant in the Washington Post “best of” article, so we decided to try it. It is a Greek/Italian restaurant with a lot fresh things on the menu. The Post article said it had one of the best patios in the district, and I love a good patio.
Even though it was 100 degrees at dinner time, the patio was covered with a canopy of grape vines. The ambiance was so laid back and romantic that I didn’t feel the heat at all. We drank cold white wine and ate the MOST delicious food.
I’m not sure if you know, but I recently have decided to live a grain-free life. After experimenting with my body, I came to the conclusion that I have a significant gluten intolerance, so I have just been avoiding it. You can probably tell from my Snapchat (find me @RoxanneBirnbaum) when I’m snapping all my meals that there’s no bread or cereal in there. I’m about 2 months in and I feel so much better.
However, the downside to going completely grain free is that your reaction will be worse on days that you “cheat.” I’m a proponent of healthy living and feeling good (not if you have an autoimmune reaction to gluten, obviously) but if you are just intolerant like me then its okay to live a little.
When our nice waiter brought us some of the restaurant’s orange glazed mini fritters on the house, I cracked. They were sooo good, but my poor tummy paid for it for the next three days. It didn’t ruin my night, but it was a learning experience. Hahaha.
Anyhow, this black cut out maxi is SO fun! It also comes in a pretty cherry blossom print, but I went with the black because I think it is chic, and I have plenty of printed maxis. The blackless detail and the side cut outs make it extra special. I wore it with my fave Sam Edelman lace-up block heels and a mint satchel that you saw in this post. See how I styled an LBD for a wedding in this post.
Have a lovely day!
