Glass of Glam

Books I’ve Read During Quarantine

in Lifestyle, Uncategorized on 04/23/20

Quarantine Reading List by popular Chicago lifestyle blog, Glass of Glam: image of a woman sitting on her bed while holding her cat and an iPad.

I’ve charged my Kindle more times the past 40 days than I typically do in a year. And that’s because I decided to read more during this quarantine phase of our lives. I’ve read seven books so far and I’m thrilled with the quarantine reading list I’ve created.

I don’t have a pretty stack of books to photograph for you because I borrow most of my books from the library. They have ebooks that I just send to my kindle! But here are screenshots of the covers along with my ratings!

Where The Crawdads Sing

I’m not sure why I put this one off for so long! I couldn’t put it down. While the story is a bit unrealistic, it traces a young woman’s life in the Carolina swamp through survival, love, and misunderstanding. It was deeply emotional and moving, and unlike anything I’ve read before!

My rating: 5 Stars

Educated

I couldn’t BELIEVE that this is nonfiction. Actually, I still can’t believe it. Tara Westover shows us what it was like to grow up in a family of paranoid, government-averse, doomsday-preppers. Once she tiptoes into the real world, you see how much education truly changes lives.

My Rating: 5 Stars

Daisy Jones & The Six

Prepare to be transported to the 1970’s where sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll reigned. I was totally engrossed in this story about the dynamics between the members of a fictional 70’s rock band. It makes you wonder what it must have been like to be in a real 70s rock band.

My Rating: 4 Stars

The Cactus

Do you like BBC shows like Killing Eve and Dr. Foster? I felt like I was watching one of those as I was reading The Cactus. The main character is a rigid, rule-following type who doesn’t have time for messy things like love and friendship. But she learns to let go of control and logic when she loses her mother and learns that she will soon become a mother herself.

My Rating: 4 Stars

Such A Fun Age

They say reading gives you empathy because you’re able to look through someone else’e eyes. Well this book did just that. I liked the perspective of a young black babysitter, her interactions with her privileged boss, and the unexpected twist that connects them.

My Rating: 4 Stars

The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Books about the Holocaust are certainly heavy. But I think it is important to read the stories and remember the history so atrocities like this never happen again. The true love story is what kept me from putting this one down.

The Whisper Network

Three female attorneys uncover a a sneaky spreadsheet that lists all the bad men in Dallas. Deciding their slimy boss should be on it, things start to spiral out of control. There’s a sisterhood between the female coworkers, as they navigate work, motherhood, pumping in the office, and sexist remarks. Definitely a good beach read!

My Rating: 3 Stars

The Dutch House is so good! I’ve also listened to Jessica Simpson’s memoir, Open Book, and it is AMAZING!!! It really dismisses any preconceived notions you might have of her. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is by the author of Daisy Jones and it’s even better if possible!
