Did you know that the way you lose weight most efficiently is coded into your DNA? I took The Home DNA Healthy Weight test to find out because #knowledgeispower.
So this post is a little bit nerdy – sorry about that. I love posting about fashion and beauty, but sometimes the health and fitness topics fascinate me. If you follow me on Instagram, You’ll know that I’m always posting my workouts and things I eat on my Instagram stories.
I took the Home DNA skincare analysis (you can see my results here) and I was so interested that I wanted to take this weight loss one, too.
Taking The Test At Home
The test is super easy to take. You just swab both cotton swabs on the inside of your cheeks for a minute each. Then place both in the sample envelope and mail it in to the lab. Approximately 2 weeks later you will receive your results via email.
My Results
The results come in a multi-page document, but I decided to just screenshot the summary for you so you can see everything all at once. The results are organized into categories: my weight loss ability, food, nutrients, and exercise.
Weight Loss Ability
I was most surprised to see that my weight loss ability is below average!
So just because you follow the same workout and eating regimen as a friend doesn’t mean that you will lose weight at the same rate. I might have to work a little bit harder, or some of you may find that the pounds just melt off.
This isn’t that enlightening to me, because I’ve been the same weight for years and years. Losing weight has always been a struggle for me, and now I know why.
Food and Nutrients
I’m happy to report that I can easily digest protein, carbohydrates, and fats with ease. I liked that the test told me a break down of how much of each macronutrient I should be eating, with some recommendations on which proteins, carbs, and fats to eat. Based on my age, hight, current weight and activity level I need to consume about 1,300 calories a day. That feels kind of low, but maybe I’ll try it out to see how it feels.
I was SHOCKED to learn that I need to be eating more complex carbohydrates to lose weight. I have always thought that low carb was the way to go. But based on my genes, I should be focusing on complex carbohydrates for the majority of my daily calorie intake. To make it super easy, the results include a custom meal plan with goal calories and simple meal ideas, like this lentil salad recipe.
With regard to nutrients, you can see from the results which nutrients I have a genetic tendency to lack. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I am low in those nutrients (like B12) but that I need to pay special attention to those. I would need to take a blood test to figure out my true and current levels.
Response to Exercise
My body has a greater response to strength training than cardio. So what I learned is that I need to do more minutes of cardio than the average person in order to lose weight. This doesn’t come as a shock to me at all!
I know that when I am lifting weights my body changes and I able to keep weight off. If I stick to just running or cardio machines, nothing drastic happens. The test results come with a handy custom exercise plan based on my genetic profile, with options for strength exercises, gym machine options, running, walking, fitness classes, and home workouts.
What do you think of a genetic test like this? I you’re interested, you can use code HW50 for $50 off your order of the Healthy Weight Kit! The code is good until 4/30/18.

Hey!! Have you seen results using these recommendations? I’m Curious how it’s been working for you.
Roxanne says
Yes, I have! I started adding in more carbohydrates like sweet potatoes (just a small amount, maybe 1/4 cup at meals) and it has made a huge difference in my energy levels and ability to lose weight. I also stopped doing as much cardio and instead started focusing on lifting weights! I’m really happy with my results so far!

This is interesting stuff! And how neat that the results break downs what you have insufficient amount of and what you can do to get it. Just goes to show us that we are all different and unique and need to listen to our bodies and not what’s trending. Lol ????

that was fascinating. how do they figure all that out based on a cheek swab – what are they actually measuring? are you going to change your diet or exercise routine based on rhe results you learned?
Brooke says
This post gets me excited!! I knew there had to be so much more to what works for each individual in regards to diet and exercise. I need to try this – I would love to know if I need more carbs, because I struggle with low carb, even though everyone says it’s the best!

Thank you, Jodie! It really taught me that while there is so much advice out there, you really have to listen to your body and experiment with what works best for you.
