Designing My Push Present
I always knew that when the time came, I would want a piece of jewelry to remember the birth of my first child. The term “push present” is kind of silly…but I’ll take any opportunity to design my own piece from Ivy and Rose Jewelry! Dan wanted to gift me something for carrying our baby and literally pushing her out. So who am I to refuse?
I really love to collect jewelry that I associate with happy times. For example, I have a vintage ring my grandmother gave me when I was young, a Jewish Star from my Bat Mitzvah, a Tiffany necklace Dan got me in my first year of college, and a pair of earrings I purchased to remember our babymoon in Hawaii. Whenever I wear or see those pieces I’m transported back to that happy moment. So for my push present I wanted a ring that I could wear every single day because I knew it would be one of the best days of my life.
I turned to Ivy and Rose Vintage Jewelry to help me design my push present. I’ve worked with them before on shoots (so glam), and their team is a dream! They design custom jewelry and find the most gorgeous vintage pieces! Check out their Instagram – you won’t be sorry!
The Design Process
Dan and I met with the Ivy and Rose team at their showroom to kick off the process! If you’re in Chicago, Ivy and Rose is located inside the iconic Jeweler’s Center Building on Wabash. I showed them photos of what I wanted, and tried to describe it as best as I could. I knew I wanted something with a colored stone, but I wasn’t sure which one. They told me that Sapphires and Emeralds are the strongest colored stones, so we went with sapphires and diamonds so the ring would withstand the test of time!
We ultimately decided on alternating round and princess bezels with a unique engraving on the side. A few days later, Ivy and Rose sent us design photos to make sure that the ring was exactly what I wanted!
After that, Ivy and Rose set out to create my custom ring.
After we approved the design, Ivy and Rose jewelry started creating my custom ring. The photo on the left shows the casting tree that holds wax models of the ring. The jewelers used the wax piece to create a mold for the ring. After a few processes of pouring metal and filing, they’re able to produce a raw casting!
Since the metal comes out rough from casting, the jeweler has to file the rough parts to perfect the shape and remove excess metal. On the right, you can see the the jeweler filing the raw casting to make it ready for the stone setting process!
Finally, Ivy and Rose hand-milgrained the top, which I think gives it such a vintage flair. The milgrain are all the tiny dots you see on top of the ring!

I’m so happy with my ring! I wear it between my wedding band and engagement ring. To me, it signifies all the most important and fulfilling moments of my life so far. And when I look down, it reminds me of how lucky I am.
If you’re looking to design any jewelry, definitely check out Ivy and Rose! They will work with you wherever you live, and will help you design the piece of a lifetime.

What a pretty ring and how nice that it has special meaning for you! It’s great you got to design your own 🙂 We joked about push presents but we never got one – i think it’s more of an American thing?
Thanks for the link up!
Hope that you are having a great weekend 🙂

The baby is the real push present! But the ring was a lovely bonus! We had a lot of fun designing it.
