So I’ve been thinking a lot about my individual style. I have been disappointed in myself about the subject lately.

My 70s Vibes Outfit & My Dilemma
I often find myself looking at other blogs and scrolling through Instagram to see what pieces of clothing I should be liking. And I admit that I’m ashamed of that. I will have XYZ in my cart, then change my choices because they aren’t what everyone else likes or is choosing. I often get those things in the mail/back home and hate them with a passion or only wear them once.
When ModCloth asked me to style an outfit from their fall collection, here’s what happened. I literally chose my favorite pieces in 5 minutes – retro button up flares and a pinkish red turtleneck – because they spoke to me. Then I started second guessing myself. My brain said “choose the cat dress or the fox sweater or somethings super unique that will WOW people.” I sat on my order for 2 days and waffled back and forth about what to do. But my heart and instinct said “ROX – you will look ridic and you won’t be happy. Just be true to yourself and choose what you know looks good on your body and all will be okay.”
I should have put on the blinders and went with my instincts! Since I sat on my order for so long that I didn’t have to time to have these flares shortened before we shot them. So sorry, I know they are too long! It bothers me, too.
Being a style blogger is hard because you want to keep up with the trends and sometimes get sucked into wearing what everyone else is wearing. What I love about being a “style influencer” (if you can even count me as that) is that I get to do what I love by inspiring others with my outfits and photos. And the only way that works is by being myself.
From now on, I will stop second guessing my taste. Within 5 minutes of shopping, this was the FIRST outfit I had in my cart. When I got it in the mail I was SO excited that it fit my vibe immediately. I feel amazing in it and love the 70s vibes look!
If you’re interested, I recently did another collaboration with ModCloth where I styled the cutest retro sweater here!

Link-up Time!
My lovely co-host for this week’s link-up is Sierra from Beautifully Candid! Sierra’s style is so wonderfully approachable. I could see myself in anythings she wears! She lives with her husband, two precious little boys, and sweet golden retriever. I love reading her blog because it feels like I’m having a conversation with a girlfriend!
My favorite look from last week’s link up was Sheela from Sheela Writes. Sheela took a break from writing for awhile, but I am SO glad she is back! Because her blog is so eloquently written and I love reading it! Plus her style is edgy AF in the best way possible. Her outfit last week was just that: edgy yet feminine with a hint of athleisure.
Make sure to check out Sierra’s blog for her favorite look from last week’s link up! And be sure to subscribe to the On Mondays We Link-Up email list so you remember to add your links every week!

I agree it is so hard to follow your own true style. I try to do a little bit of both… I try to chose outfits that are ones I know I’ll wear a lot and will be very versatile. But, I will also try to step out of my box every so often!

Hi Rox,
Nice to virtually meet you! I found you on Sierra’s blog and love this post. This hat and bag are so dreamy and I love the 60’s-70’s boho vibe with a modern taste this outfit has to offer. I say always go with your gut and your style will shine, which brings confidence and that is what the readers are attracted to–a look that evokes comfort in your own skin! 🙂
Best,

I love when bloggers stay true to their style! I do the same thing and often buy things I think I should have rather than what I really love/what looks good on me. I always feel best when I go with my instincts too! I think you look great in your flares. 😀

Thanks, Brooke. I’m happy you agree! Sometimes I feel like my instinctual style is “boring” but the X-factor you get when you really feel confident in something makes up the difference!

Adorable! I love those pants- and yes, i had them in the 70’s!!

Ah well I am basically a clone of you just 30 years younger!

I love this look. The 70s are one of my favorite styles right now. I love your blog and your style and totally understand what you’re saying here too. It can be hard when maybe the things you really like aren’t on the trending radar but I do think that people like to see different takes on styles and wearing items that you can wear in real life help me when I’m in a fashion rut.

You and I have similar styles, for sure! My favorite bloggers wear clothing that works in real life. I love the editorial crazy looks, too, but the simple looks always inspire me!

I completely understand! My style is a strange mix while being very classic (I go from girly dresses to suits) and sometimes I wonder if I had a more “consistent” style I would appeal to more people, but I am so happy with my own style I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am glad you decided to go with your gut, and stick to what you love. I love 70’s style, and those pants are fab on you–and I can tell you enjoy the outfit too!
Mary
Roxanne says
Thanks so much, Mary. That’s true, my style changes depending on what I am doing (work or casual). I think being versatile is a way to reach more people!

I love that you went with something that you liked! I’ve been guilty of that too. I think it’s so easy to get caught up in and wanting to get things that will drive sales or stand out. I have a collaboration coming up too and I am so glad that I decided to go with what I really wanted and what I will wear often. This outfit is perfect and it looks great on you! I love those jeans, and wearing a hat in the fall is my favorite. Thank you for letting me co-host with you 🙂 Beautifully Candid
Roxanne says
Thank you, Sierra! You are a fabulous co-host! It is always a dilemma when brands let you choose your own outfit, I get it! I can’t wait to see what you picked for your upcoming collaboration.
Bojana Krienke says
Such a heartfelt post. I love your style and really admire you. I’ve often felt like that, especially since everyone always seems to have new stuff and one of my goals is to Ste things that women on a budget, for whatever reason, can still dress nicely and feel good about themselves. So though I am often temped to buy, I have tight restrictions self imposed. This is a fabulous look and funny thing is just on Friday I was telling my co-workers that I really wanted high-waist, wide leg jeans but was going to see if I could find some at a thrift shop. ?
Roxanne says
Aw you’re the sweetest, Bo! I really admire you too. Let me know if you find some high waisted flares at the thrift shop! I bet you will!
Jennie says
Yea, it is hard sometimes to not get sucked into all the trends and staying true to ourselves. While I do like wearing some trendy items, I try to pick ones that work with my own style aesthetic. Love everything about this look and how you styled it. Those red sandals are freakin amazing!
Roxanne says
You do such a good job at sticking to your classic style! I could take a page out of your book!
Sheela Goh says
Thank you so much, Roxanne!!! I’ve never had my style coined as Edgy AF before so you can imagine how pleased I am. Mine is not often understood, let alone appreciated so thank you thank you thank you.
I’ve done that too. Quite often. Look at what the populars are wearing and then rush out to buy them for myself, in some odd thinking that if I looked like them, I’d gain the same numbers, the attention of the same brands, become as famous. Clearly, it didn’t work 😛
You do you, my friend, because it’s really a rather cool and fabulous you.
Roxanne says
Haha! It was the first descriptor that popped into my head, and since we are talking about “going with your gut” I had to say it! I love your stye so much.
Sheela Goh says
MUACK!!!!

Good for you, Roxanne!! We do get sucked into what others are wearing, and it’s not bad to try out other styles and things!! But when it comes right down to it, loving what we wear is so important!! And feeling good in our clothes makes us feel confident!!!
This look is perfect on you, and really it’s quite ageless!!! I’d even wear it and love it!!!

Yes, I always get sucked in! Especially during that Nordstrom sale! Thank you SO MUCH, Jodie!
Julie N says
Girl…stop being so hard on yourself! You are so right that EVERYONE is wearing the same things, and tons of bloggers have the same look. I could barely stand looking at Insta during that Nordstom sale. Everyone was posting the same ugly booties. I like originality for me, and I refuse to cave into buying what everyone else is buying. I love shopping with small merchants and those who make custom items just for me. I love having things that others don’t. I love the Moto: If anyone can have it, I don’t want it. Your look is fabulous, and I didn’t even notice the length of the jeans! Be you!
Roxanne says
I love your motto! I need that to be my mantra when I’m shopping. Thanks for your wisdom.
Mica says
This is such a great look! I love the vintage vibe to it 🙂
Definitely stick to your personal style and wear what you want – it’s boring when bloggers all look identical, much better when you see some personal style from people 🙂
Thank you for the link up!
Hope you have had a good weekend! I’m currently enjoying the long weekend as it’s a public holiday today in Brisbane 🙂
